Snake tries to escape alligator’s jaws in dramatic pics at Florida wildlife reserve

A life and death struggle between a desperate snake and a hungry alligator in central Florida was captured by a pair of wildlife photographers over the weekend. Husband and wife photographers Jesse and Linda Waring were visiting the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida on Saturday when they saw the orange and brown snake doing its best to escape from the jaws of the alligator.

‘Jesse’s eagle eye spotted this big guy working on his lunch and his lunch trying to escape! I just started clicking…!’ the husband and wife duo wrote on their business’ Facebook page Sunday morning. The ecological battle of wills the couple witnessed l asted more than 10 minutes. Their amazing photos show the powerful gator opening its jaws periodically after consuming the slithering snake.

Each time the legless reptile poked its head out of the toothy predator’s mouth, trying desperately to avoid becoming the gator’s latest meal. But eventually, the larger animal prevailed as the gator chomped on the snake’s body for the last time. ‘In the end, the snake finally lost the battle when the jaws of the gator made a direct hit down the length of his body. It was a hard fought battle,’ Linda told WKMG.

This isn’t the first time the Warings have witnessed bizarre predatory battles in the wild. Linda said she’s captured images of an osprey flying off with a bonnethead shark it snatched straight from the water in Tampa Bay. ‘It takes patience and persistence and I recommend to keep trying for that amazing shot. The fun is in the pursuit and just getting out in nature. You really never know what you’re going to get,’ she said. Florida is home to 44 species of snakes according to the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
